Weight Watchers
Weight Watchers in a recent has shown that the new diets on the block aren't as effective. With the low-carb craze dwindling, the tried-and-true methods of simply watching what you eat and counting points are still the best way to lose weight and keep it off.
Weight Watchers is a commercial weight loss program that focuses on balanced low fat nutrition, exercise and group counselling. Every item of food from pizza to ice cream to carrots to bread has a points value based on its nutritional content. You may eat as you like as long as you stay within your allotment of points. To assist the dieter in their lifestyle changes all members are encouraged to attend group discussion and counselling sessions, mostly in person, at a local Weight Watchers centre .
Weight Watchers programs have historically been good programs. They advertise aggressively, trying to convince overweight people that they can lose weight without sacrificing the foods they love. Weight Watchers is one of the good guys in this industry of pill pushers and unscrupulous "experts." The program costs around $45-60 a month, which makes it expensive.
Additional points can be earned for exercise. Individuals also receive 35 additional Flex Points each week to spend however they choose. Individuals can also choose not to use Flex Points to increase their weight loss potential. Weekly meetings teach individuals about the Weight Watchers program and offer group support to help individuals lose weight and keep it off.
Weight Watchers has seen a rise in people concerned with their carbohydrate intake to the point where they want to disproportionately limit it. It’s been noted that some of her pupils believe they cannot even have an apple because it contains carbohydrates, despite the fact that it offers so many important nutrients. Much of this is likely associated with the rise in popularity of the Atkins Diet which largely promotes a high protein, low carbohydrate diet.
Weight Watchers does not focus on eliminating any food group, instead trying to modify an existing diet to produce a well-balanced intake of foods. Carbohydrates play an important role in diet. You need to work with all food groups in your diet. Yanking out a whole section of the pyramid is not good. You miss nutrients. When you eliminate carbs, you are missing all those B vitamins and irons. You can take a supplement, but studies show that nutrients from food are better absorbed in the body. Carbohydrates also offer a lot of fibre.
Instead of eliminating any food groups, Weight Watchers stress a well-balanced diet that takes into consideration each person's lifestyle. The goal is not to just lose weight, but to keep it off. Understanding the role of carbohydrates is part of this. You want to eat more of the complex carbs, the whole grains. They have more fibre, which slows glucose consumption. Thus, complex carbohydrates do not convert into sugar as quickly as refined ones.
There is nothing wrong with reducing carbs, but narrowing down to 10 grams is unrealistic. Weight Watchers is not an extreme diet. You will not be at your weight goal in several weeks. You may lose one or two pounds a week. But, modifying your habits realistically will keep you healthy for an eternity.
