  Protein Diet

Protein diets are essential to preserve lean body tissue, especially if one is restricting carbohydrate intake. For example, protein functions as enzymes in muscle contractions. Therefore muscle protein is needed for movement. If tissue protein is degraded, body functions can become compromised.

Having a zero nitrogen balance is the difference between the amounts of nitrogen ingested each day and the amount of nitrogen lost in urine and sweat. If more nitrogen is lost than eaten, the person is said to be in negative nitrogen balance. The body needs all of the twenty amino acids to synthesize proteins. If an essential amino acid is in short supply it will limit the amount of protein made.

A high protein diet using proper protein sources will provide you with an adequate supply of all the essential amino acids. A high protein diet is necessary to preserve muscle, especially when one is following a low carbohydrate plan. Ensures the presence of all essential amino acids on a daily basis. Thus, allowing the synthesis of all proteins and the replacement of lost body fat with lean meat.

The hormone insulin, which is released by eating carbohydrates, is known to cause health problems such as heart disease, fluid retention, diabetes and excessive weight. By keeping carbohydrate intake low and eating a high protein diet, your body will burn fat faster. Insulin has become unpopular because of the fact that it helps the body store fat.

The protein diet basically eliminates foods like fruits, cereals, breads, grains, starches, baked goods, starchy vegetables, and sweets. This translates into a significant calorie reduction and is the basis of any weight loss diet. Any reduction of calories from carbohydrates or fat, will result in weight loss.
