Obesity Risks
Obesity Risks include physical ailments such as high blood pressure, hypertension, high blood cholesterol, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, hyperinsulinemia, coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, congestive heart failure, stroke, gallstones, gout and osteoarthritis just to list a few. Obesity has also been linked to some types of cancer, such as breast, prostate, and colon cancer.
Not only does obesity affect the body but it is also blamed for psychological disorders such as depression, eating disorders, distorted body image, and low self-esteem.
In the United States, obesity has become an epidemic over the last 20 years. Research shows that the situation is not improving. It is understood that someone who is obese is excessively overweight and the obesity risks that come with this are very serious to one’s health. However, obesity actually means having an excessive amount of body fat. On the other hand being overweight is defined as an excess amount of body weight. This could mean having too much muscle or retaining too much water. Bodybuilders for example, who usually carry a lot of muscle, can be described as being overweight. Someone who is overweight is usually carrying 25-30 pounds more than the recommended weight for their height. But, someone who is obese is somebody who is at least 30 pounds over the recommended weight.
The body mass index (BMI) is the medical standard used to measure people who are overweight or obese. It is a height-weight system of measurement. It's not perfect because someone healthy and fit can fall into the overweight category. Nevertheless, it is a useful tool.
Basically, obesity risks occur when a person eats more calories than he/she burns. Factors such as genetics, environmental and psychological can all play a part. With genetics, obesity risks tend to run in families. Science has shown that obesity is linked to heredity. Of course, families may share certain diet habits that contribute to certain obesity risks.
With environmental factors the obesity risks are brought on by a person’s behaviour. Americans tend to eat high-fat foods, and put taste and convenience ahead of nutrition value. Most people do not get enough physical activity as well.
If you want to reduce the obesity risks you must learn to choose nutritious foods. You must also learn to recognize and control environmental factors like smells that make you want to eat when you're not actually hungry. And yes, we all need to exercise to be healthy.
Psychological factors can also influence one’s eating habits and lead to certain obesity risks. Many of us eat because we are bored, sad or angry. Other causes of obesity and obesity risks are certain illnesses, which lead us to gain weight. These include illnesses like hypothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, depression, and certain neurological problems. All these can lead to obesity.
