Nutrition and Eating Right
Nutrition and eating right is also tipping the scales in your favour. One way to do this is to include fruits and vegetables with your meals. The National Cancer Institute suggest that for better health nutrition program should include five or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
The amount of food your body needs every day depends on your age, size, activity level and whether you are male or female. This is why the Food Guide provides a low and high number of servings for each food group. For example, children choose the lower number of servings, while male teenagers generally need the higher number. The rest of us people can choose servings somewhere in between.
Nutritious foods and a balanced diet will help your child grow up healthy. Whether your kid is a toddler or a teen, you can take steps to improve nutrition and encourage smart eating habits. Some simple tips that will help are to have regular family meals, serve a large variety of foods and, serve as a role model by eating healthy yourself. Kids are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables this way. Easier said than done with everyone’s busy schedules, and fast food restaurants at every corner.
It is important that we strive to eat nutritious foods and find time to have everyone at the dinner table. This may mean eating dinner later in the evening because little Johnny is at hockey practice. Include fruits and vegetables in everyone’s daily routine, aiming for five servings a day. Serve lean meats and other good sources of protein, such as eggs. Only buy whole-grain breads and cereals for more fibre. Watch fat intake by avoiding fried foods and choose other ways of cooking, such as, the grill and steamer. Eating too much fat can increase your risk of illnesses like heart disease, cancers and high blood pressure. Health professionals recommend that you keep your intake of saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol as low as possible.
Avoid eating chips and candy as much as possible. You can eat these foods occasionally otherwise you are only depriving yourself. Drink water and milk instead.
The best way to encourage healthy eating habits is to eat well yourself. Your kids will follow your lead. By eating healthier and not overdoing it with less nutritious foods, you will be sending the right message.
Food is fuel, and the body needs fuel for all of its activities. A proper diet will not cure your disease, but it will make you feel better. You will have more energy, and your body will be able to fight infection better.
