Medifast is another fast weight loss diet using meal replacements. The program has been prescribed by doctors for many years (particularly for obese people). More recently Medifast has established an online presence, and the program can be purchased online - with substantial discounts (such as 1 week free).
Medifast 5 and 1 plan
This Medifast plan is made up of 5 meal replacements per day - generally shakes, but there are also bars, soups, oatmeal, and puddings (see below). In addition to the meal replacements - 1 meal per day is a "lean and green" meal - a small portion of lean meat (see below), and generally up to 2 cups of salad or vegetables. This is an excellent addition to the daily routine and makes the diet a whole lot more do-able.
You eat every 2-3 hours, and must drink a minimum of 64oz of fluid (water) per day. Other drinks can be consumed in addition to this.
Weight loss is rapid - from 2-5 pounds per week. The Medifast diets do not quite fall into the category of VLCD's (Very Low Calorie Diets), as the caloric levels are above 800 kcal/per day. However calorie levels are still low (depending on your current weight, height, and size), It is for this reason that they recommend having supervision from a physician (although it is not mandatory).

As a fast weight loss diet, does Medifast really work?
Medifast is one of the more successful and balanced low-calorie diets - it has been used successfully at John Hopkins Weight Management Center, among other places. The 5 and 1 plan is an excellent idea - as it still includes one genuine meal that your body must digest - compared with other fasting diets that slow metabolism right down.
This kind of diet needs to be used carefully, and is generally only used by the extremely obese (BMI >= 30). If someone is seriously overweight, doctors use a mathematical formula that takes a person's height and weight and spits out a number called the BMI. They then compare the person's BMI to those on a special chart. In adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 25 is normal, greater than 25 are overweight, and greater than 30 is obese. An adult who is 5 feet, 5 inches tall, for instance, would have to weigh 150 pounds to be overweight and 180 pounds to be obese.
Obese or not obese, anyone can go to the Medifast site, and order a 1 month starter kit (shipped free of charge).
