Celebrity Diets: Not For Ordinary Mortals
Celebrity diets are one of the most popular diets around; owing to the fact that their chief proponents are the stars. Like a virus strain, celebrity diets can take dizzying mutations. But in the end, they are still diets, virtually all of which promise to lose weight on the fast track. Most of them are low in carbohydrates and calories.
Celebrity diets usually partake of the features of the Atkins diet in that they usually involve high-protein meals. They also tend to allow meals high in fat. Some may even have you eat grapefruit with every meal; some include a magic drink that will enable you to burn off pounds effortlessly. In the end, they are all based on a low calorie theme.
These celebrity diets tend to leave you weak and fatigued. You may lose weight, but it will be because you are starving yourself. Some celebrity diets even allow you to eat foods high in fat, which can ultimately lead to heart complications.
The next time you read about a celebrity film star who has lost weight using a particular celebrity diet, take it with a grain of salt (not literally). Film stars aren't like us! They have personal cooks, personal fitness trainers and endless other retainers to assist them. In other words, what works for them won't necessarily work for you.
A celebrity with a multi-million dollar reputation linked to their size and shape has a unique incentive to lose weight, no matter how bad the celebrity diet. Renee Zellwegger had to put on a lot of weight for the Bridget Jones Diary. And Keanu Reeves had to be as light as possible for the Matrix series.
Celebrities often resort to secret starvation to help the process along. Fine for them, perhaps, if it helps them to maintain their careers, but it's usually a waste of time for us ordinary mortals to adopt a celebrity diet.
When choosing a diet to suit you, pick one that works for ordinary people - not super-stars. Above all, don't be influenced by celebrity diet claims of fast weight loss. Celebrities and film stars have goals vastly different from yours. So always consult your own doctor, not theirs! Besides, you probably can’t afford a celebrity diet, anyway.
Not all diets are created equal. Diets are like people. One diet works for one person but is atrocious for the other person (e.g., Diabetic diet, Hypoallergenic diet, etc.)
U.S. doctors are being told that they may face legal action unless they warn patients about celebrity diets which are putting the health of a weight-obsessed public increasingly at risk. High protein and other fad diets now being sold through books, videos and magazines are potentially dangerous.
In at least two recent cases, the government has intervened on behalf of the public. So in all likelihood, the crackdown on celebrity diet proponents preying on unsuspecting ordinary citizens is up next.
Take note:
Charged with false advertising were marketers of the AB Energizer, AbTronic, and Fast Abs devices, all which claim to use electronic muscle stimulation (EMS) to give users "six pack" or "washboard" abs without exercise or effort.
In 2003, the FDA banned the use of the stimulant ephedra, a once-common diet pill ingredient linked to serious heart problems.)
The Atkins diet has transformed many Americans into ‘carbophobes,’ rejecting healthy low-fat diets in favor of dangerous low-carbohydrate ones. People are being asked to register online so they can track health problems and encourage individuals to take legal action where appropriate.
In particular, the campaign will target high-protein weight loss programs such as the Atkins Diet, said to have been responsible for the dramatic reduction in size of celebrities including Geri Halliwell, Jennifer Aniston, Minnie Driver, and many others.
The Atkins claim is that insulin makes you store fat, and restricting the bread, potatoes, pasta and other carbohydrates you eat will stop an over stimulation of insulin.
